1. The North was the most diversified area of the country. It had farming, manufacturing and shipbuilding, among other things. The South was a plantation economy. They grew and exported staple crops and had to "import" most of the things they needed from Europe or the North. The West was mostly small farmers. This area was most concerned with being protected from Indian attacks and with the desire to get more land so more people could have farms.

2. These differences were the beginning of what we call sectionalism, the development of the country and the economy into two distinct sections, with societies that developed to match.
