Through the sale of cotton to England and other countries. The Union blockade of the Southern Ports prevented this from being effective and they were not able to set up any regular trade. The lack of sufficient funds caused the South to limp through most of the war. They could not afford the more expensive weapons and equipment that the North began implementing near the end of the war.

1. The northern government had more money and stock in the National Bank, they had higher credibility which made it much easier for them to access capital markets.
