In March and April 1945, the US forces reoccupied Okinawa after they had destroyed the Japanese navy. They had to fight against heavy Kamikaze raids causing high casualties on both sides. It was originally planned that the Americans would invade Japan, but the two atomic bombs had been ready to drop. So the US dropped one onto Hiroshima (6 August, 1945), and the other one on Nagasaki (9 August), and these actions forced the Japanese to surrender.
