China didn't exactly just convert to communism. In 1949, Mao's communist forces successfully routed the nationalist forces of Chiang Kai Shek, whose government left for Taiwan. The United States continued to recognize the Taiwan-based government as the legitimate government of China until Nixon opened up relations with Beijing in the 1970's. Carter subsequently switched official recognition of China from Taipei to Beijing.
America issued the policy of containment in order to rid the world of the communist scare. Also Joseph McCarthy suffered severe attacks in his court hearings that resulted into the term McCarthyism. Later, the U.S created the CIA and the HUAC in order to get rid of those who were communist. In response Americans were scared that the communist party was going to over ride them, that the American government started persecuting those who supported communism, or were different.
During the time of the California Gold Rush in 1849, the usual rivalries existed between gold hungry men (claim jumping, murders, stealing, etc.). After the Chinese built the railroads in 1869, with that completed and large populations of Chinese now settled in California, the slogan of the "Yellow Peril" (the Yellow race conflicting with the white race) surfaced, and the clash of Oriental (Eastern) culture with Occidental (Western) began to take shape. This resulted in the anti-Chinese laws enacted in San Francisco during the 1880s. These laws were repealed prior to WWII, as China was an ally during that war.
The initial response by the united states was to protest communist expansion. It later developed into the Vietnam War.
As the saying goes (or went), being called a "Commie" in the US during the 50's, 60's, and sometimes the 70's, was "fighten words!" It went along with the slogan, "Better dead than red."

The Ming government was not impressed by the Portuguese. The Chinese thought the Europeans were barbarians or uncivilized people. The Chinese refused to trade with the Portuguese, but by 1600, they had allowed Portugal to set up a trading post at the port of Macao.
