The Continental Railways were a huge problem for the buffalo. It was before many of the hunters understood the concepts of conservation.

There were hunts conducted directly from the trains. This meant that the hunters could carry much more ammo and firearms than they could have on foot or on horses. It also gave them a way to carry many hides, the meat, and other buffalo products for almost immediate sale or trade.

There was a lot of money involved with hunting buffalo in this way, and over a 20 year period, tens of millions of buffalo were killed in this fashion.

The American Indians could not understand the reason for the wanton killing of the buffalo. Many blamed the railroad because the railroad brought in the buffalo hunters by the hundreds. It was believed that if you destroyed the buffalo that the plains tribes depended upon so greatly, that the Indian would soon follow and die off.
