Railroads made travel between towns and cities easier and faster. Before the popularization of railroads, each area had it's own time based on noon being when the sun was straight up in the sky. This led to some confusion about travel times and such, so they made set time zones for areas to group together under.
Every large town set it's 'Local time' by when the sun was directly overhead at midday. This means that if you travel 1000 miles time will be around 1 hour different between these two point. Railroads trains travelled between distant towns and needed to work to a standard timetable. 'Local time' had to be sacrificed for 'Standard time' and there are a number of time zones in USA since it is so wide.
Railroads made the first way of recording standardized time. This gave a more accurate measurement of telling time so that there was no more confusing being experienced from one rail station to the next.
Railways are vehicles for sending messages, mail, private transportation, military transportation in a faster way then before railways were fully developed. In the United States, one of the major railroad breakthroughs was the completion of the transcontinental rail system that connected the East coast of the USA to the west coast. It should be noted that non stop travel by rail from the east to the west actually began first west of the Mississippi.
before railroads, each community determined it's own time based on how the sun travels.this was called solar time. it however caused problems for people who scheduled trains crossin different time zones

US railroad time was by individual railroads and typically very different from location to location, and railroad to railroad. This caused many collisions - and arguments over right-of-way were common (they typically ran by a timetable schedule based on time). This resulted in the railroads adopting "Standard Time" in 1883 so that all railroads could use the same time. Railroads had master clocks that received a telegraph signal to synchronize the proper time. This Standard Time that was developed is what is in use today in the US, although the methods for synchronizing clocks had much upgraded technology.
