Fortunately, the Colosseum was never destroyed. It's a little the worse for wear, but it still stands in Rome as a monument to the glory of a bygone empire. After the fall of the Roman Empire, it was used as a fortress. Today it survives as a tourist attraction.

The Collosseum in Rome looks like it was damaged in past wars, but the truth is that no bombs ever hit it. The destruction began with the Romans when they used it as a stone quarry. The practice continued throughout the middle ages. The damage, or holes in the Collosseum that look like bullet holes are actually places where the lead center piece in columns was removed when lead was in great demand.

The Colosseum was/is only partially destroyed. Even if all the external frills are missing, its still a remarkable structure. It was destroyed by vandalism. All its marbles and statuary has been stripped off and used for other building purposes. The exposed under-brick has suffered weather damage and pollution damage.
