The most noted reaction was the 3-day draft riots in NY in 1863, The riots were only partially due to the draft but also triggered by the Emancipation Proclamation and the resulting fear that blacks would more into NY and take jobs away from the poor whites. A dubious feature of the draft was that a man could pay $300 and avoid it. The rioters said that slaves sold for $1000 plus , but they were only worth $300.
