The use of the telegraph greatly impacted the US Civil War. Probably more than earlier European wars, American field generals were able to communicate rapidly with each other and their political leaders in Washington DC and Richmond. The telegraph also allowed President Lincoln and President Jefferson to direct military operations even when these operations were hundreds of miles away.Also the press was able to send news stories about the war from their field positions to their newspapers in Northern or Southern cities.
