The Romans had more problems with their Germanic allies than with their Germanic mercenaries.
Alaric I, the king of the Visigoths, who was an ally of the Romans, got involved in a dispute with the emperor of the western part of the empire, Honorius. When Honorius refused to meet Alaric's demand, Alaric besieged Rome three times and on the third occasion sacked it. Before he did this there were riots in which many Germanic allied soldiers in Italy, and their wives and children, were killed. The survivors (an estimated 30,000 men) went to Alaric and asked for revenge. Alaric's troops were strengthened by these defectors.
The last emperor of the western part of the Roman Empire, Romulus Augustus, was deposed by Odoacer, a Germanic officer of the Roman army, who led a rebellion by Germanic allies stationed in Italy which followed the refusal to grant them land to settle.

Although the Romans could levy plenty of troops from Italy, some of their allies had specialities that were useful such as slingers, bowmen and cavalry which could reinforce the Roman units. An example of this is their Batavian allies who were not only excellent horsemen, but they prided themselves on being able to swim across a river in full armor.
