The Whig party was Pro slavery. But during the election they never mentioned it. Had they, they would have said that they were against it. But the wanted slavery. They were the rich party so they believed they should have servants... I saw this answer and it is partly wrong, to be more precise the Whig Party was not very stable and was always seemingly on the verge of dissolving. There were "cotton" whigs and "Conscience" whigs. Cotton whigs were obviously southern and approved of slavery. The Conscience whigs were not a large part of the Whig party (they were from Mass. I believe) , but the majority of Whigs were for slavery. The Conscience Whigs formed the Free Soil Party after Zachary Tyler was nominated for the Whig party (he was a slave owner) and that showed how easily parties could split. A good example of a anti-slavery president who turned Whig (the party was not around yet)was John Quincy Adams. Being rich would not have made you a pro-slavery advocate if you want to dumb it down that way then it would be more correct to say being southern would have made you pro-slavery right? Wrong most southerners did not own slaves. Generalizations stir the pot and create turmoil. PS: Lincoln was a Republican (the Republican party came from the Whig party)which is kind of weird how a mostly pro slavery party can evolve and elect a Man who ends up fighting a war to abolish it! Yes, I believe the Civil was fought over slavery and state rights, because obviously the federal government telling a state they can not have the institution of slavery is impeding on their rights ( a PR move by Southern sates to invoke southern pride).

Texas had fought a war with Mexico and won. They declared Texas to be an independent country. Texas later applied to become part of the United States. At first the United States said no because they knew Mexico would protest. But a wave of feelings called "Manifest Destiny" made Americans feel that American would get better if it grew bigger. James Knox Polk campaigned to make Texas part of the United States but it was done before Polk became president. Mexico did protest and the United States invaded Mexico. In addition to Texas, America took land for Arizona, California, and Nex Mexico.
