If you believe that Jesus existed, then you have to look at what happened at the time of Jesus' capture. When Judas and the guards came to the garden of Gethsemane all of his disciples abandoned Him and ran off. They were undoubtedly frightened about what would come next. Now after Jesus was crucified I'm sure they were all confused since he was supposed to be their promised messiah yet they watched him die. However, when the disciples saw the resurrected Jesus 3 days later they became joyful and courageous knowing what Jesus told them was true. That lead them to share the good news of the gospel with boldness. Even allowing themselves to be martyred for what they knew to be true, which was that Jesus, the Son of God came to us to pay the penalty for our sins so we wouldn't have to and be reconciled to God through His death and resurrection. Without their leader, the disciples now had to prove their faith.
