Wilberforce, over a period of years and amidst much opposition, fought to have slavery abolished by presenting a number of bills to the British Parliament. He was a Member of the House of Commons. The final abolition did not occur until a month after his death.
John Newton, writer of 'Amazing Grace' and former slave trader, encouraged him to continue the fight through the Parliament, when he considered leaving when he became a Christian.
The first of Wilberforce's main achievements occurred when the 1807 Act for the Abolition of the Slave Trade only abolished the trading of slaves and was not retrospective. It is this Act which is being commemorated in 2007 upon its 200th anniversary.
Wilberforce continued his push for full abolition until the Slavery Abolition Act in 1833 declared slavery illegal and ensured slaves would be freed, or paid and later completely freed.
He first tried to abolish the slave trade in 1791, where he found out people thouroughly agreed with him, when people for no were out ruled 163 votes for yes to 88 votes for no.
i don't know exactly but i think he thought for them in court for slaves OR he went onto boats to get rid of punishments e.g whips, guns and so on so slaves are more free on boats, but I'm not exactly sure.
