In the US and Britain young women tended to replace men in factories and a large number joined the forces. In Britain that would be the female branches of the armed forces or the ATS who had various roles in AA and searchlight batteries, driving trucks, attachment to military units for passing intelligence to forward units, etc.
In Germany and Japan women were normally expected to carry on doing what they did in peacetime with emphasis in Japan on growing food.
