In most churches, there are a number of Bible readings. For example, in the Lutheran churches, there is an Old Testament reading and two New Testament readings. In Baptist and similar churches, there may be readings associated with the message from the preacher, and people will follow many references during the sermon in their own Bibles. Some Presbyterian groups only sing words that are from the Psalms.

Catholic liturgy and spiritual life is replete with Biblical allusions and quotes. Catholics use The Bible in:

* their liturgy * the Divine Office priests are required to pray every day at several appointed times * Catholic devotions and private prayers * Catholic music

Usually, quotes and texts of the Bible are selected for one's particular need, in order to give adoration, Thanksgiving, petition or to make reparation to God. The Psalms figure particularly popular in Catholic prayer and form the basis of the Divine Office, Liturgical refrains and popular devotional prayers and invocations. Both the Old and New Testament are used by Catholics, with a heavy emphasis on their continuity.

Catholic AnswerThe Sacred Scriptures are used all through the liturgy. The Breviary, which contains 6-8 different Offices for each day is composed mostly from Sacred Scripture. The Eucharist is replete with it all the way through, and there are two readings on weekdays (besides the psalm) plus three readings on Sundays and Solemnities so that the entire Sacred Scripture is read through on a three year cycle. In addition the importance of Sacred Scripture in Catechises, and in the family cannot be overemphasized. As St. Jerome said, "ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ" and the Catholic Church has considered it imperative to both read and teach the Sacred Scriptures all throughout life. As God wrote the Sacred Scriptures, through human authors, and the Church approved them and put them together, the Bible is the Church's book, which she both jealously guards and uses all throughout her life.

from The Catechism of the Catholic Church, second edition, English translation 1994

80 "Sacred Tradition and Sacred Scripture, then, are bound closely together and communicate one with the other. For both of them, flowing out from the same divine well-spring, come together in some fashion to form one thing and move towards the same goal." (Dei Verbum 9) Each of them makes present and fruitful in the church the mystery of Christ, who promised to remain with his own "always, to the close of the age." (Mt 28:20)

102 Through all the words of Sacred Scripture, God speaks only one single Word, his one Utterance in whom he expresses himself completely: (Cf. Heb 1:1-3) You recall that one and the same Word of God extends throughout Scripture, that is one and the same Utterance that resounds in the mouths of all the sacred writers, since he who was in the beginning God with God has no need of separate syllables; for he not subject to time. (St. Augustine, En. In Ps. 103, 4, 1: J.P. Migne, ed., Patrologia Graeca {Paris, 1857-1855} 37, 1378; cf. Ps 104; Jn 1:1)

103

For this reason, the Church has always venerated the Scriptures as she venerates the Lord's Body. She never ceases to present to the faithful the bread of life, taken from the one table of God's Word and Christ's Body. (Cf. Dei Verbum 21)

104 In Sacred Scripture, the Church constantly finds her nourishment and her strength, for she welcomes it not as a human word, "but as what it really is, the word of God." 1 Thess 2:13; cf Dei Verbum 24) "In the sacred books, the Father who is in heaven comes loving to meet his children, and talks with them." (Dei Verbum 21)

141 "The church has always venerated the divine Scriptures as she venerated the Body of the Lord" (Dei Verbum) 21): both nourish the govern the whole Christian life. "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path" (Ps 119:105; cf. Isa 50:4).

Churches use their scriptures to justify their existence, their powers and their positions on issues. The lists of fallacious arguments would list this as Genetic Fallacy (Fallacy of Origins, Fallacy of Virtue). This is described as an argument has some particular origin such as being written by their deity, the argument must be right (or wrong) and cannot be questioned. Basically that things from that origin cannot be in error. Therefore, the reasoning behind the argument can be overlooked, since correctness is part of its simple existence without any justification or thinking.
