In Hinduinsm, one had to be re-incarnated a numerous amount of times to get ride of the spiritual footprints on their soul or hence their karma. The idea is to live as many lives as possible to get rid of this karma, but you have to be careful what you do and how you live because you mind have to start all over again as a dung beetle or something...
In essence you have to lead a certain kind of life..But, also with Hinduism there is a sort of duty...Or, stages, the last stage which is where you can get rid of these desires (and some go straight from student to this state, skipping the others) is the recluse/hermit stage. Although much easeir done in India if you want to get literal, you go alone to the forest and live tehre and renounce all the earthly stuffs.. Everyhting and live a cerebral sort of life, but not one filled full of quiring knowledge about stuff in a pompous way - more spiritual.
