How do you resize a partition?

You have two ways to resize a partition: 1. Use the built-in Disk Manager in Windows7/XP. However, with it's help, you can only increase your system partition e.g. Drive C:, but can't shrink the size of partitions. 2. Use a third-part software. I recommend all the users of Windows OS to download a third-part freeware for managing your hard drive. An excellent partition assistant is suggested: Aomei partition assistant Home Edition. It's totally free and simple to use, you can read the guideline below to know more details about this partition magic. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Resizing partition with the Partition Manager on Windows 7 You can resize directly to the desired size for your partition. Clink Resize. At the opening of the window you can then indicate with precision the size of your new partition. You can reduce the size quickly and change the partition size by dragging the double-headed arrow (circled in red). Then click OK. Your hard drive will appear in two parts: A partition with operating system Windows 7 (in blue) and an Unallocated Partition (in gray). To validate these changes simply click on Apply. 2. Create a partition with Partition Manager Assistant Home Edition 2.0 on Windows 7 Once you have completed the resizing your partition, create the partition so that Windows 7 will recognize it and can use it. This is the same to right click on the unallocated partition and click on Create. Otherwise, you can also select the unallocated partition and click on Create. In both cases, you will get this dialog box telling you the settings to create your partition. In the partition label (partition name) enter a name easy to remember and easy identification. We chose to use the name of Disque_6GB. While this is optional, we recommend that you define then a letter to your reader. For our part we have chosen the letter E. It's your choice and identify that the letter of your future hard disk partition. Then click OK. All parameters for the partition management are now complete. It remains only to apply for that Partition Assistant Home Edition 2.0 makes these changes and recognize them in Windows 7. To validate these changes simply click on Apply. 3. Apply changes all partitions to take effect Once you have clicked on Apply, you will confirm these changes by clicking on Proceed (Continue). Note: In the Resizing Partition (partition resizing) in blue you have an instruction required reboot (restart required) which means you'll have to restart your computer for the changes being made. Save your open documents before you click on Proceed (Continue). Then click Restart Now. Windows 7 is going to restart. At this stage it is always possible to undo the changes by clicking on any key on your keyboard. Otherwise, the partitioning assistant will launch after 8 seconds... The changes are being ... Partition Assistant 2.0 Home Edition is currently conducting the required changes ... It will take time Partition Assistant Home Edition 2.0 transforming. Attention these ends, it is important to be patient and do not restart your computer until the process is not completed. Conclusion In this tutorial we saw how Windows 7 change a partition, the resize or shrink partition with application Partition Assistant Home Edition 2.0. It free provide for personal users or home users. The Partition Manager has the functions which the Windows "Disk Manager" doesn't have, such as resize system partition, extend/shrink partition and move partition. These cannot be handled via the Windows built-in partition manger, so the 3rd party partition software, Partition Assistant is needed to you. Yes, you will free enjoy all features of the partition manager. More informations at: http://www.disk-partition.com/resource/free-resize-partition-windows-7.html

What is a hidden partition?

Hidden partitions are typically found on Brand name PCs such as HP (hewlette packard), Dell, Acer, and Gateway. This hidden, or system partition, is used to do system recoverys (not to be confused with system restore). Built into Mac OS X is an application called Disk Utility, which can format and partition any internal or external volume. It's located in /Applications/Utilities/. How can I format Windows Vista?

If you have the windows install disc, you can insert it, restart your computer and press any key when it tells you to. This will boot from the DVD and enter the Windows Setup. From there, it will show you a list of partitions on your hard drive before you install windows. Choose the partition on which Vista is installed and click "Delete" under advanced options. The partition will be formatted. If you want to install a fresh copy of Windows Vista, you can do so now. If not, exit windows setup and install whatever OS you want to use. (Make sure you BACK UP your files before formatting - once you format the partition, you can NEVER get the files back.)

How can you unistall unfinished windows installation?

You'll probably have to reinsert the "Windows XP SP_ Installation Disc" and restart the installation again, and redo the events you did the last installation, until the Partitions screen occurs/appears (In Windows XP Installation Process), and select the Partition on which you previously chose to install Windows, and the select it to be formatted using NTFS file system as you did in the last setup. This will cause the partition to be formatted with NTFS file system and make it an empty, useful partition ready to allow Windows Installation to continue on it. Later in GUI Installation, you install Windows XP as usual until the final step. Now, your Windows XP is fine, new, fast and clean Installed Windows Operating System....

How do you partition a mac hard drive without losing data?

If you are running a recent version of Mac OS X you can use the Disk Utility software found in the Utilities folder within the Applications folder. As with all disc based operations it is good practice to have a back-up copy of your content. From the Disk Utility Help page (The Help menu is your friend):Creating new partitions on a diskYou may be able to create multiple partitions on your disk without losing any data. Each partition works like a separate disk. You may need to create a new partition if you want to install multiple operating systems on your computer. Partitions can also help you organize your files.NOTICE:Back up your data before creating new partitions on your disk as a precaution. To create new partitions on a disk:1. Select the disk from the list at the left, and click Partition.2. Select an existing partition in the Volume Scheme list, and click Add (+).
Disk Utility splits the partition into two, leaving the data in one of the new partitions. If the partition is less than half-full, Disk Utility creates two partitions of equal size. Otherwise, it creates one partition large enough for the data, and another partition with the remaining space.3. Resize the partitions as needed.
You can drag the dividers between the partitions in the Volume Scheme list, or you can select a partition in the Volume Scheme list, and then enter a value in the Size field.4. Choose how to format the partitions that will be erased or created.
For each new partition, select it, enter a name, and then choose a format.5. Click Apply.Or you can get under the bonnet and do all that geeky stuff:You need to use the "diskutil" command line program, along with the "-resizeVolume" flag...Here is the help information for this command:#################Disk Utility ToolUsage: diskutil resizeVolume [Mount Point|Disk Identifier|Device Node] size ...Non-destructively resize a disk. You may increase or decrease its size. When decreasing size, you may optionally supply a list of new partitions to create.Ownership of the affected disk is required.Valid partition sizes are in the format of .Valid sizes are B(ytes), K(ilobytes), M(egabytes), G(igabytes), T(erabytes)Example: 10G (10 gigabytes), 4.23T (4.23 terabytes), 5M (5 megabytes)resizeVolume is only supported on GPT media with a Journaled HFS+ filesystem.A size of "limits" will print the range of valid values for the current filesystem.Example: diskutil resizeVolume disk1s3 10G JHFS+ HDX1 5G MS-DOS HDX2 5GValid filesystems: "Case-sensitive HFS+" "Journaled HFS+" "Case-sensitive Journaled HFS+" "HFS+" "HFS" "MS-DOS FAT32" "MS-DOS FAT16" "MS-DOS" "MS-DOS FAT12" "UFS" "Linux" "Swap"#################So here's what you need to do: (if you want to install a Linux partition)In the example from the help command, they are creating a second and third partition on the disk - you don't need to do this (because diskutil doesn't create ext3 or ext4 partitions)...leave the space as "free" or unpartitioned space. When I'm giving you commands below, a normal shell prompt is shown as a "$" (you don't need to type in the $)....1.) MAKE SURE YOU AREN'T RUNNING ANY OTHER PROGRAMS WHEN YOU'RE RUNNING THESE COMMANDS. YOU WILL NEED TO RESTART THE MACHINE IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE PARTITION GETS RESIZED.2.) Use the diskutil command line program to determine which device number your startup disk is:$ diskutil listThis will list out information that shows device numbers (ie. disk0, disk1s5, etc.). Determine the identifier for your hard drive (it will be listed under "name" - you probably only have one partition, and it's probably the last on on the list)./dev/disk0#: type name size identifier0: Apple_partition_scheme *149.1 GB disk01: Apple_partition_map 31.5 KB disk0s12: Apple_HFS Macintosh HD 148.9 GB disk0s33.) You need to determine how much free space you have available, and how much you want to split off for Linux (you will want to leave a little for the Mac side, but have enough for Linux or whatever you are doing)...For the most part, if you "Get Info" on the hard drive, and it shows that you have 95 GB capacity, and that 40 GB are used, 75 GB would be a good size to resize the Mac partition to (giving you 35 GB of space there, and 20GB free space for LInux)...4.) To do the actual resizing, you'll need to use the "sudo" command to run the command as root:$ sudo diskutil resizeVolume disk0s3 75GB
