I would suspect that your lock mechanism is worn, so that when you double click the remote unlock the lever does not engage properly. A decent mechanic should be able to order the parts and fix this in a day or so.

Manually you can unlock the door using the inside lock (above the handle). Toggle it so the 'red' portion shows and the door is unlocked. With the remote, press the (unlock) button twice. You can set the door locks so both the driver and passenger doors unlock when you put the transmission in park (and lock when you put it in gear).
