Jews maintain their culture by going to synagogue, eating a kosher diet, wearing traditional clothes, refined speech and actions, and speaking a special language, whether it be Yiddish or Hebrew. Many send their kids to private Jewish schools, where they learn about being Jewish, and the boys study Jewish law. Secular subjects are not forgotten, though. Some Jews have all of these, and more. Some have less. But they are all Jews regardless.
Through learning, teaching and keeping the Torah and its laws.
There are two quite unpretentious principles that are unique to Judaism
that might help answer the question:
1). The principle embodied in the exclamation of the Jews when they stood at
Sinai, and said words to the effect: "Everything that Gcd has spoken we will obey
and we will listen." (Exodus 24:7) This should bother you when you read it, and
you should say "That's not right! You have to hear all about it before you obey."
and that's exactly the point ... the Jews took on themselves the obligation to obey
the law even before they had learned all of its details and the reasoning behind it.
This is the principle which, in practice, has even the least educated Jew participating
in the rituals, and the Jewish child becoming accustomed and familiar with the
activities and ambience of the Jewish home from his earliest recollections.
2). The second principle that may help explain the continuity of the Jewish traditions
and philosophy is one that will seem trivial in the 21st Century. That's only because
this particular Jewish ideal has been so universally adopted by the modern world.
It is the commandment to "Teach your children". It was weird and unthinkable
when it was given to the Hebrews. It planted the seeds of continuity in them, and
ultimately became the standard of civilization.
