well it really depends where you want to build and what for if you are near the coast simple open shelter will do further inland closed in ones will keep the cold out . I am from the nsw south coast most shelters were leen to ones which could be made very easily from sticks and bushes that were all around and there was always a fire in front. Leen to shelters you start by finding 2 larger stick with forks at the top these are stuck in the ground then you make a square frame with cross hatching that are lashed with lamandra or gymia lilly leaves this then becomes the roof this is then lashed to the 2 forked sticks after this you put bark on top of the square frame mainly stingy or paper bark both are waterproof and then leaves and sticks i have to go now but will respond to the other types of shelters latern thanks rob williams

What was the traditional aboriginal shelter before 1788?

Indigenous people did not have any one type of shelter; their shelters would depend on their environment. Because they were on the move constantly, they could not build elaborate structures. Mostly camp sites would have lean-tos or other simple shelters constructed from bark. Often times people would make use of natural surroundings for shelter.
