Some chemicals can cross the blood barrier between the uterus and the fetus and enter the umbilical cord. This is sometimes due to a high concentration of chemicals such as alcohol, or in heavy metal poisoning.
Because the placenta develops blood vessels in the uterus wall then attaching itself to a baby by way of the umbilical cord, I would say drugs reach the fetus by passing through the placental membrane, but keep in mind that from there the drugs are delivered via umbilical cord. This is better defined on page 1080 of the 8th edition of Anatomy & Phisiology. It says, "The allantois forms as a small outpocketing of embryonic tissue at the caudal end of the yolk sac. In animals that develop in shelled eggs, the allantois is a disposal site for solid metabolic wastes (excreta). In humans, the allantois is the structural base for the umbilical cord that links the embryo to the placenta, and ultimately it becomes part of the urinary bladder. the formed unbilical cord contains a core of embryonic connevtive tissue (wharton's jelly), the unmbilical arteries and vein, and is covered externally by amniotic membrane." As you can see, the amniotic membrane acts as a covering, the transport is through the placenta, where humans gather their nutrients.
The deoxygenated blood and the baby's waste products pass from the foetus to the mother. The mother can then dispose of these through her systems.
alcohol, nicotine, drugs can travel through the placenta
Name a substance that passes through the placenta from the baby to the mother
Via blood circulation!
[object Object]
Via the blood stream and umbilical cord.

Some medicines can cause birth defects very early in pregnancy, often before you even know you are pregnant. Creating a treatment plan for your health condition before you are pregnant can help keep you and your developing baby healthy.because drugs taken by a pregnant woman can reach the fetus and harm it by crossing the placenta, the same route taken by oxygen and nutrients, which are needed for the growth and development of fetus
it can still do harm to your baby no matter how early in the pregnancy it is taken and my advice to you and anyone else who takes any form of drugs is to stay off of them because not only can it harm a fetus it can also harm you it is not safe for anyone to do drugs weather you are pregnant or not i know this is blunt but i have had experiances with my family members who have taken drugs and it is not only hurting you it is hurting the people around you good luck and i hope that all goes well for you BAD I DEA
There are medications that women can take when they are pregnant that are considered safe for the unborn fetus. What you can do is look online for a Nurse's Drug Guide and type in the name of the medication that you are wondering about. Usually they have a section called "Pregnancy Category" If the drug is a "Pregnancy Category X" These drugs should NOT be taken while pregnant. If you have any questions you should call a Nurse and they can check all of your medications and see if they will be alright for your unborn fetus.
Antibiotics are not recommended when pregnant because it can affect the fetus (not miscarriage) but sometimes it has to be taken. Your doctor will decide which one you can take if you need it.
IF you are already pregnant and dont know but insert an IUD or marina Can this cause a miscarriage
YES! Anything you do while your pregnant can potentially harm the developping fetus. When you get drunk or high your baby will have the same effects. It could cause birth defects, brain damage, learning disabilities, all sorts of problems. If you want to see some images of thalidomide victims, researche it on google. Thalidomide was a drug used in the 60's by pregnant women to help them cope with morning sickness. Millions of these women gave birth to mutated babies. These babies had no arms or legs, so basically at their shoulder you would see hands and near their pelvis' you would see feet. Not a pretty sight. The drug was taken of the maket only a year later.
All organs of the Fetus are formed during first three months of Pregnancy. So drugs taken during this period have high chances of 'Structural' damage to the Fetus. Afterward 'Functional' damage can occur. So your Doctor will be very careful about drugs given in First Trimester ofPregnancy.
More than 90% of pregnant women take prescription or nonprescription (over-the-counter) drugs or use social drugs (such as tobacco and alcohol) or illicit drugs at some time during pregnancy. In general, drugs, unless absolutely necessary, should not be used during pregnancy because many can harm the fetus. About 2 to 3% of all birth defects result from the use of drugs other than alcohol.Drugs taken by a pregnant woman reach the fetus primarily by crossing the placenta, the same route taken by oxygen and nutrients, which are needed for the fetus's growth and development. Drugs that a pregnant woman takes during pregnancy can affect the fetus in several ways:They can act directly on the fetus, causing damage, abnormal development (leading to birth defects), or death. They can alter the function of the placenta, usually by causing blood vessels to narrow (constrict) and thus reducing the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the fetus from the mother. Sometimes the result is a baby that is underweight and underdeveloped. They can cause the muscles of the uterus to contract forcefully, indirectly injuring the fetus by reducing its blood supply or triggering preterm labor and delivery.Edit- by Granny Storm Crow- Cannabis has been shown to reduce the size of a baby's weight at birth, however this does notincrease infant mortality. In the study "Mortality Within the First 2 Years in Infants Exposed to Cocaine, Opiate, or Cannabinoid During Gestation",the "cannabis only" babies had a mortality rate LOWER than "no-drug" infants! Not one "cannabis only" babies died! In contrast, 26 of the "no drugs" babies died.A lady named Jen Alexander did a wonderful in depth (and readable) article on the "Mortality" study -"Pregnant Women Smoking Pot Could Reduce Infant Mortality". However, I really think using a vaporizer, or edibles, would be far wiser! Smoking carries with it carbon monoxide and other combustion "nasties"- vaporizing or edibles would be much safer both for Mom and the baby.I hope you will take the time to read the study and article. Cannabis is NOT what you think it is! Cannabis is a medical miracle! (Run a search on my name and see what else I have found about this amazing healing herb!)
It´s not encouraged to take antibiotics when pregnant but sometimes you have to. The abcess can spread to the bloodstream. You need to go to the dentist and have this taken care of.
It is not recommended that cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril) be taken while pregnant. Although no formal studies have been done to test its safety in pregnant women, cyclobenzaprine is closely related to a group of antidepressants that can cause problems to the fetus. Hope this helps.
