The culture of a society can have a variety of effects on the population. If the culture typically places high value on children, or if women's only position in the society is to give birth to children (and their other options are limited) then the country will likely have a high population; a good indication of this is India.
If the culture is more inclined to value male children (as in China) then there will eventually be too few people. In China's case this will take some time, however because their ratio of male to female is seriously askew they are currently very concerned about the future of their country. In Japan women are able to hold real jobs and not necessarily be a stay at home mother and so they are marrying later, and generally having no more than 1 child (if that). This is raising concerns in Japan and they are currently promoting a 'replacement plan', that is, the ideal family has 2 children; one to replace each parent.
Cultural influence can have the largest impact on a population because it tends to define every thing from the world view to the economy of the society.
