Earthquakes cause fires when gaslines are ruptured, releasing gas, or power lines brought down, causing arcing and sparks. Wood-burning apparatus can be tipped over. In an earthquake, water mains can also be broken, further compounding the problem because fire-fighters do not have access to water to fight the fires.

They can tear open the underground natural gas pipelines that humans have buried. I've personally seen (on the evening news) six- to eight-foot high flames coming up out of the sidewalks in L.A. after earthquakes (more than once). The Great Fire of San Francisco (1906) was the result of an earthquake.

Is a fire a secondary effect of earthquakes?

Fire is often, but not always a secondary effect of earthquakes. If the earthquake strikes a populated area, it is likely to break natural gas pipes, and to cause other damage in human structures that will result in fires. In an unpopulated region, an earthquake may not cause a fire.

Why does the ring of fire have tsunamis volcanoes and earthquakes?

The Ring of Fire is also known as the Pacific Ring of Fire. The yellow line is the location of the Ring of Fire. The Ring of Fire is bascically where the Earth's tectonic plates have spread apart and cracked, allowing warm lava to rise and causing many earthquakes and volcanoes. Also, the plates here often shift and that is why there are often tsunamis. Tsunamis are caused underwater by onshore earthquakes that are very powerful.
