  • low frequencies induce eddy currents in metals, heating them.
  • high frequencies vibrate atoms themselves, heating the material
  • higher frequencies trigger chemical changes.
  • very high frequencies knock electrons out of atoms, creating reactive ions.

Electromagnetic waves are a means of transporting energy. See related links, below. In the section called Rationale, you can click on each type of electromagnetic wave and find information.

When you place food in the microwave, the water molecules absorb the energy. This causes the water molecules to rotate and vibrate at a higher velocity. Temperature measures average kinetic energy of the atoms. So, the temperature of the food increases.

When I sit in front of the infrared heater, my skin feels warmer. As the molecules in my skin absorb the energy of infrared wave, the kinetic energy of the molecules increases. So, the temperature of the skin increases.

In chemistry, we learn about electrons. The energy of visible light "excites" the electrons. This is how we see the colors of objects.

As you continue down the list, the energy of the electromagnetic wave increases. This means the electromagnetic waves become more dangerous. Ultraviolet radiation can cause skin cancer. When you get an x-ray, they cover the other parts of your body to protect them. Gamma radiation can actually damage the DNA in your cells.

Influence that electromagnetic waves have on temperatures and global warming?

Radio waves do not emit enough radiation to cause any major changes in temperature. They hardly make any difference at all to the temperature around them.

What cause radiation heating?

heat transfer through electromagnetic waves. (apex).

What is the reason for ultrasonic waves not being in the form of electromagnetic waves?

Ultrasonic waves are high frequency sonic waves. They're sound, which is mechanical energy. Electromagnetic waves are waves of electromagnetic energy, like radio waves or light. Mechanical energy is different from electromagnetic energy, hence the reason for ultrasonic waves not taking the form of electromagnetic waves.

Sound is not part of the electromagnetic spectrum because?

because sound waves are not a electromagnetic waves because they need a medium for travel....hence electromagnetic spectrum is based on the electromagnetic waves ..like radio waves , micro waves , etc....

Why call light as E M wave which is not having neither electric nor magnet?

Electromagnetic waves, like light, do involve changes in the electric and the magnetic field. These changes propagate at the speed of light - as a wave.Electromagnetic waves, like light, do involve changes in the electric and the magnetic field. As an electromagnetic wave changes, so does its energy.

How much pollution does a electromagnetic wave cause?

Electromagnetic waves only cause sound pollution because they are sound waves.

What materials reflect electromagnetic waves?

Any good conductor reflects lower frequency electromagnetic waves up through the microwave bands, polished surfaces (these do not have to be conductors) reflect electromagnetic waves in the IR/visible/UV frequency range, almost nothing reflects (except at very very shallow angles) x-ray/gamma ray electromagnetic waves.

Are the sun's rays mechanical waves or electromagnetic waves?

Electromagnetic waves

How is electromagnetic spectrum related to electrons?

No direct relation; electromagnetic waves are transmitted by photons. However, electromagnetic waves are often caused by the acceleration of electric charges, and those charges are usually electrons. Also, electromagnetic waves are emitted and absorbed when an electron (in an atom) changes to another energy level.

Waves travel quicker through solid gases?

Waves travel faster through denser materials. However, Electromagnetic waves travel faster through less dense materials. It travels fastest in vacuum.

What is a magnet and which a magnetic material?

Magnetic materials are all made of iron. They carry electromagnetic waves.
