The goldfish is actually a domesticated cousin of the carp (Carassius auratus) found in Asia. This means that it has never had to worry about predators in the wild, because it has always been protected by man.

This is similar in ways to the domesticated dog which originates from the wolf. If you have ever seen the selective breeding that takes place from one generation to the next, you would have been amazed at how changed the current breeds are from what they were like even forty years ago.
