The quakes directly associated with the movement of magma are concentrated beneath the island's active volcanoes, Kilauea and Mauna Loa. Very shallow quakes frequently precede or accompany an eruption. Hundreds of such quakes make up swarms that commonly occur over a period of several hours or days before an eruption as magma forces its way into a new area. These quakes are seldom large enough to cause widespread damage, but they may produce extensive ground fracturing close to the potential eruption site. Once an eruption begins, the quakes usually diminish.

How did the Hawaiian Islands form?

Volcanoes - It is called a hot spot and as the earths crust moves over the spot, volcanoes form and in this case, created the chain of islands. They formed from a hot spot in earths crustThe Hawiian Islands are the tops of huge undersea volcanoes. The way the islands have formed, although far away from any fault, the area is a volcanic hot-spot. Back a couple million years, the crust beneath was thinning and rising. A series of undersea volcanic eruptions force volcanic material upwards, making the islands. The thinning of the crust, literally, moves southward to make other islands. It has to do wih tectonic plates

What are some geographical features that make up Hawaii?

The Hawaiian Islands have many major landforms. These landforms include Kilauea, Mauna Loa, and Mauna Kea volcanoes. Other major landforms include the Waimea Canyon and Mt. Lanaihale on the island of Lanai.

Why do mountains sometimes build up around a volcano?

Volcanoes are places where the melted or molten part of the earth is squeezed out onto the surface. Some volcanoes are more gentle, and the lava, or molten rock, oozes out without exploding. Hawaiian volcanoes are this sort. Other volcanoes are very explosive, sometimes blowing off their entire tops in one huge eruption, like Mt. St. Helens in the US. Volcanoes build up into mountains because as the lava flows out, it hardens into rock. The more lava that comes out, the higher the rock pile!

How did mount Kilauea form?

Mount Kilauea formed as a Shield Volcano, as the Pacific plate moved over a geological hot spot magma broke through the crust of the earth and formed a set of volcanic mountains on the sea floor. The tops of these mountains are now the Hawaiian islands.

Is Japan flat?

they have shortage of flatland due to most of it being covered in mountainous land so they have to make new flat land out of the mountains that they then dump into the ocean to create flat land that they cover in concrete also when the mountain land becomes flat they have more land to build on.

Do islands float on water?

Islands are not floating freely on the surface of the water. They are locations where the solid surface of the earth are elevated above sea level. Imagine a hilly field slowly filling with water. You will reach a point where the tops of some of the hills become isolated from one another with water all around.

How was Five Islands formed?

The Hawaiian Island Chain (consisting of 19 islands and atolls) are actually to tops sea-mountains known as the Hawaiian Ridge. It was form over thousands of years by volcanic activity over a "hotspot" in the Earth's mantle. Movement of the tectonic plates have moved the island chain slowly in a north by northwest direction, thus creating more islands (read mountains).

How was Honolulu formed?

The Hawaiian islands are the result of a hot spot beneath the Pacific Plate. Hot material rises from deep within the mantle and collects beneath the lithosphere. Some of it rises through the crust and erupts at the surface, forming volcanoes. Those volcanoes gradually build up into islands. As the plate moves over the hot spot the old volcanoes go extinct and new ones form.

Would Hawaii sink because its on the sea?

The Hawaiian Islands are not floating in the sea- they're land masses. Think of them as really tall mountains rising from the sea floor, with the tops sticking out above the water.
