Best Answer

DNA strands are wrapped around the histones. In order for DNA to be accessible, histones must be modified (acetylation). If the histones are "protected" at a particular locus from modification, the genes are silenced and cannot be expressed.

What role do proteins play in enabling the enormous amounts of DNA in the eukaryote cell to fit into the nucleus and what are the proteins called?

DNA that is not being "used" by the cell is wrapped up around proteins called histones.

What role do histones play in the enormous amount of DNA in a eukaryotic cell to fit into the nucleus?

Histones serve to orderly condense the DNA by first letting DNA wrap around them and then forming gigantic coils that drastically reduce the space required to store unwrapped DNA. Think of histones as similar to the reels in a cassette. With the reels the magnetic tape can be stored in a very small volume but if you rip out all the tape it will occupy a much larger volume.

To help with biology homework what are histones?

Histones are proteins found in eukaryotic cell nuclei. They are high in alkaline. Histones package and order the DNA into units that are called nucleosomes.
