SDS is a detergent. Is is used in DNA isolation to denature proteins. Proteins are an essential component that maintain the integrity of the cell membrane. When SDS is added, proteins are denatured, thus making it easier for the cell membrane to break and liberate its inner contents. Also, DNA is found associated with proteins called histones.
