Well first off there are post addressing this already on here! Second more than likely the fuel sending unit that is inside the fuel tank that is At Fault. To check if in fact the fuel sending is bad, ground the sending unit wire which is on top of the fuel tank and if the gauge registers full the sending unit is defective. I would not waste time checking this due to reaching the wiring to the sending unit is impossible with out dropping the fuel tank down to do and recommend (HIGHLY) replace the sending unit. 99.9% of the time the sending unit fails not the gauge. It takes about two hours to drop the fuel tank disconnecting the hoses and electrical connections and physically pull the fuel tank out from under the truck to change the old part and install the new part. Make sure you have as little fuel in the tank as possible so it is lighter weight wise and this is a job. I suggest putting the truck on jack stands or ramps on the rear for clearance and disconnect the negative battery cable before you unhook the electrical stuff. It has two hoses for the filler neck and the bolts for the brackets that hold the tank and obviously sending units hardware to be removed.

If you really want to fix it, then you will have to drop the fuel tank and remove the sensor, go from there. You can check the float while it is your hand, just plug the wire harness in, move it up and down and have someone check the gauge. Might also be the gauge needle in the dash. You will find out this way.

More than likely the gauge is NOT the problem.Just make a jumper wire and disconnect the sending unit wire from the water temperature sender and place one end in the connector and ground it to the block and the gauge should work or show say hot.If it does show the gauge show the needle in the hot it is the sender is faulty and should be replaced.If the gauge does show the needle move to hot and moves to the cold it will be the gauge is bad(not likely in most cases).Have a helper in the truck to turn the key to the ON position not running when you ground the sending wiring to the block to note wether it moves up to hot or down to cold when you do this to simplify the issue.I will bet the sending unit for the water temperature is just worn out most of the time.
