How do islands formed?

An island can be formed from volcanism, from sediment deposition, as a result of coral growth, from the breaking apart of continents or from a rise or fall in sea levels. They have occasionaly been formed by land-fill and when parts of a peninsula are drowned, leaving the remainder disconnected from the larger body of land.

When lava flows into the ocean it forms land which eventually forms an island. Think of volcanic islands as the tips of mountains sticking out of the ocean.

The most common way of island formation is continental drift. This is when the continents break apart over hundreds of millions of years leaving land in the middle of the oceans, which are known as islands.
