HeadLice are dependent on humans in order to live. Off a human body the lice will only live for 2 to 3 days. After 2 days the lice would probably be so deprived of food and energy that they wont be able to start feeding even if food is around. Disinfecting the entire room with chemicals (of which might not be so good for kids) is a solution, but after a weekend of no kids there the room will have dead lice in it, but that is not dangerous. It does not prevent the room from being "infected" with lice again though as some chemicals would for a period of time.
I had the unfortunate experience of learning about headlice when my children got them when they were little. The lice liked my kids heads, that's for sure, and I don't know if it was because their hair was always clean or because it was thick and curly or what. But I do know that lice don't like grease and can't live in it if it's thick enough. In fact, I used ethnic hair grease to kill the lice. I smathered it all over my kids hair (braided my daughter's) and covered it with a shower cap for about 3 days. I kept the grease in it for about 2 weeks. Lice was gone and never came back.
Use standard bugspray on beds and other stuff the kids will be in contact with for a long time. This should keep the lice away. Additionaly, you can use vinegar to comb nits out of their hair.
The poor kid with lice in the book "To Kill a Mockingbird" is named Burris Ewell. He is a member of the Ewell family, who are known for their poverty and poor living conditions in the town of Maycomb.
