The way a hard bang on the table is louder than a soft one is a matter of AMPLITUDE.

In a simple description: the louder bang needs a higher arm movement (maybe a more angry face) than the softer one.

Sounds can be mapped as WAVES (they are a special type of wave but we won't go into that here) if you look at a typical wave, the loud sound will have more AMPLITUDE which means that the peaks and troughs will be further away from each other - and the soft sound will be close to a straight line.

What is sound louder than?

Amplitude is a measure of the size of sound waves. It depends on the amount of energy that started the waves. Greater amplitude waves have more energy and greater intensity, so they sound louder. As sound waves travel farther from their source, the more spread out their energy becomes.

Why do sounds seem louder when closer?

Sounds are louder when they are closer, because the sound is closer to your ears.

Why are some sounds louder than others?

The loudness of a sound is related to how much energy is transmitted to the air. Clapping your hands transmits a small amount of energy. Detonating a stick of dynamite transmits MUCH more energy. The amplitude of the sound wave is much greater, and the noise, louder.

Does more energy make the sound louder?

Generally, yes.

Why is it louder when the sound is at night?

At night-time there are less sounds from traffic and people - therefore any sounds that are heard seem louder.

What are the two elements of sounds?

Sounds, which are mechanical energy, vary in both frequency and amplitude. The pitch of a sound, the "highness" or "lowness" of that sound is a function of its frequency. Higher frequency equal higher pitch. The amplitude of a sound is the sound energy or "loudness" of the sound. The higher the amplitude of the sound wave, the more energy in the wave and the louder it is. source, medium and sender

Why can you hear quiet sounds loud somthimes?

Louder sounds are discriminated from quieter sounds on the basis of?

how much the stereocilia of the hair cells are bent

Why do you make a louder noise by hitting something harder?

More energy in, more energy out. Hitting something harder means that you are applying more energy in the 'hit'. Sound waves are a form of energy. So your hit might produce only louder sound, or you might break the object. Either way, the energy you put into the system comes out as sound and/or a broken object and/or some degree of heat.

Why When a banjo string is plucked hard why does it create a louder sound?

Plucking harder puts more energy into the string's movement, so it moves with a bigger amplitude, producing a louder sound.
