In the insect world they use a lot of pheromones in order to attract their opposite sex.
When you look closely on a butterfly, they do have some large antennas on their head. These antennas are used in addition to balance, also to get the scent of "things", hereby also the partner.
It is also thought that butterflies and other insects are sensitive of other wavelengths of light than what is visible to us humans.
Using special light-spectrum recording instruments we can capture different wavelengths reflected by these insects. Some look really quite amazing, and it is also thought that these patterns of "colors" not visible to man, play a role.
I would suggest a combination of both Pheromones and vivid colors not visible to the human eye. Pheromones for the long distance "phone call" (the male can sense the female pheromones from up to 2 kilometers away. Some moths can even sense their female as far away as 5 kilometers) and possibly colors when they are homed in.
Science is scarce regarding the aspect of different wave lengths of light. Science have started exploring this issue and this leads me to believe that many a book will in turn have to have added information to them in order to be 100% correct.

Their probably mating.

Monarch butterflies use their special senses to seek out and find swan plants and other things that it wants to eat. They use their antennae's to smell and find them.
the male injects the sperm into the female

Whiskering is when a male bunny puts its whiskers onto the ground. This leaves a chemical sign that the female bunny can find with her whiskers so the bunnys can find each other
Wikipedia would be a good place for someone to find information on the phylogeny of butterflies. Wikipedia is a free encyclopedia with wonderful information on butterflies.
Usually in the wild its natural. When owners breed hamsters they put a male and a female together and hope for the best.
in maraenui
they probably walk around and find each other
There is no reason why not, just make sure that the introduction goes well be introducing the two dogs to each other in neutral territory, such as a local park.
