While it is not completely necessary to have an alliance, it is far more beneficial for countries, especially those with a poor military defense, to have support from other countries in order to ensure the safety of it's people. Even countries with a strong defense would benefit from alliances, in case other countries decide to join forces against said country. Even outside of matters concerning war, alliances would benefit countries in matters of other concerns including trade perhaps.
