Countries can trade products their nation has plentiful of for other products in the allied nation. Other ways can include military allies (meaning whenever one is in a war, the other is to help in some degree or form), tourism (when citizens of one country visit another), and for educational purposes (to Study Abroad because the home country doesn't offer a certain degree of education, for scientific research, etc.).
