1. Make sure you're on the "Home" tab
2. Find the "ABC" with a check mark, but DON'T click on this, instead click on the word "Spelling" below. This brings up a list.
3. At the bottom of the list click Word Count!

Click on the "Review" tab, and under the "Proofing" group of the ribbon, select "Word Count" (it is the last button in the bottom right corner). An even easier way now is that Microsoft Word displays the number of words in the document on the status bar at the bottom of document in the left-hand corner. For a specific group of text, just highlight with the cursor and the number will appear automatically on the status bar.
