He was a flawed human being (he seems to have had a drinking problem-- although there is debate as to how much of it was real and how much was exaggerated by his political enemies; also, at one point in his life, he was very anti-Semitic, but as time passed, he overcame his prejudices), but an excellent general, a good president, and in his later years, a well-respected statesman who met with many world leaders.
