People look at gangs as a large group (almost like a family that's not related at all) of mostly African-Americans, Hispanics, or Asians that kill, rob and harass people for no reason to look cool.

In most cases,yes, when a community has gangs that shows that crime exists in that community. A reason gangs are prevalent in lower class area is that people are dissatisfied with the conditions they are living in and looking for a way out.

They look to gangs as a means to make money with criminal activity, and a way to be taken care of. They look to it as a way to learn the streets they have to live with everyday and since they may be falling behind in school, or they believe there is no way out of 'hood life no matter how well they do academically. They look to gangs because gangs may intimidate them into joining or else they'll hurt them and/or their love ones, or another gang is already harassing them, so they feel they have protection with joining up with another. And then there are those who just would rather cause chaos and do nothing more in life than that. It should be noted that people from the ghetto aren't the only ones who create gangs. There are many suburban gangs as well.
