You must find where the pipe is collapsed usually by snake in till you hit the

break or uncovering the pipe till you find the break. Cut both ends of the break

with a saw or chain cutter so you have a nice smooth end. Install a rubber

coupling on both ends slid onto your clay pipe. Measure and cut a replacement

piece of pipe to fit between, slide rubber boots over the seams and tighten.

Be careful not to over tighten and rebreak the pipe. Sewer lines have little

to no pressure so a snug tightening will do. Run water down line and look

for a leak. Cover and silt in dirt and you are ready to go.

Why is sewer water coming out of a pipe in your backyard?

A 3 or 4 inch pipe sticking straight up out of the ground? This is the clean out for the sewer line. If sewage is coming out of it, this means the sewer line is clogged or collapsed from there to the main city sewer. If you have a septic tank, the tank is full and needs to be pumped out.

What problems might occur if I don't keep my sewer lines clean?

The obvious and main problem (and reason to keep your sewer lines clean) is because a backed-up sewer line means that sewage can get backed up into sinks and bathtubs. This is unsanitary and a health hazard. A broken sewage line is costly to repair.

What are the two main types of sewer systems?

The two main types of sewer systems are the sanitary sewer system and the stormwater sewer system. They are different because sanitary sewer system has water from sinks, baths, washing machines, and toilets and the stormwater sewer system has water from the rain or melted snow that run off streets and the surface of the land.

I have a clay sewer pipe running from the main line in the basement floor. It is all cracked and doesn't appear to be in use. What could have been the purpose of this pipe and can it be removed?

This may be an old sewer system probably going to a septic drain field. Before you discard this be sure you have a working potty draining system.

Where does the water in the washer drain to?

It goes into the main sewer system. It will go through your sewer system and then out to the main sewer. That is if you live in town!
