By using a satellite dish, a person will be able to access channels that are not available over public airways (public networks are ones such as NBC, ABC, or FOX). These other channels that do not offer themselves to be viewed freely are paid by private satellite TV providers to allow their programs to be broadcast by a certain TV provider, and that TV provider is in turn paid monthly by viewers of satellite TV for being able to watch these shows.

Satellite dishes work very similar to the way a magnifying glass works. The light is concentrated to one spot. The satellite dish catches radio waves on the part that looks like a dish . Then they are reflected and concentrated to a small spot on the receiver on the dish this signal is then sent to the tv. The receiver is the part that sticks out in front of the dish.

Radio telescopes work by collecting electromagnetic waves in the "radio" spectrum emitted by the object under observation (planet, star, comet, etc.), and focusing these waves into something that can be visualized and analyzed. The waves are beyond the visual spectrum, so they cannot be magnified and observed through the refractive lenses or reflective mirrors of normal telescopes.

Radio telescope dishes are parabolic in shape which means that a ray striking the surface at any point will be reflected to a central focus point, thus concentrating, and thereby, magnifying, the image. An electronic device for collecting the concentrated waves is located at the focal point, much the same as a satellite dish used for television reception. Television and radio stations broadcast on waves within the "radio spectrum".

Today, information travels faster than ever. And, thanks to the power of the satellite dish, it communication promises to get only easier.

The satellite dish is a type of antenna setup to receive microwave transmissions from orbiting communication satellites. These orbiting satellites transmit information, television or radio broadcasts, or internet service. The potential use of satellites is seemingly limitless.

In addition, data transmitted by satellite is exceptionally accessible. Unlike landlines or cable transmissions, data from satellites is available to anyone anywhere. This means checking your email or watching your favorite show is possible even in the most remote places.

Satellites transmit information from a geosynchronous orbit, which means that they orbit at the same rate that the Earth turns. The satellite is launched into orbit at 7,000mph, and orbits at 22,200 miles in the air. At this altitude, the satellite makes a full rotation with the Earth every 24 hours. This way, dish users need only to point their dish antenna at the satellite once, and it will remain in focus.

Early satellite dish users watched television that most homes didn’t get. They were at the forefront of new programming. Today, it is much more common for homes to get satellite or digital television, and programming is far more diverse than it used to be. In addition, satellite dishes used for homes are far more compact and affordable than they once were.

Today, satellite antenna pick up programming from national turnaround channels like HBO, ESPN, and CNN, as well as local channels like ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, and PBS. Large turnaround television stations beam their signal straight to the geosynchronous satellite in orbit, where the data is compressed and transmitted to satellite dishes. In contrast, most local channels don’t transmit through satellite at all, but rather through fiber optic cable or ground antenna.

Satellite programming provides viewers with a great deal of choice. However, as internet broadcasting becomes more varied and popular, it seems likely that major broadcasting channels may get replaced. In the near future, satellites could very well transmit internet programming along with the major stations to viewers, and thus open up a limitless variety of viewing options.

The dish is the antenna. The dish shape causes signal that hits a larger area (the surface of the dish) to be concentrated on the actual antenna (the lnb).
