Underground erosion by flowing water creates a cave. The roof of the cave collapses to form the sink hole.
Okay, let's say there is a deposit of water soluble rock such as limestone. There is a shifting of the earth and an underground flow of water starts running through it or directly beside it. It will slowly dissolve into the water, leaving a gaps of space where parts are eaten away

Eventually the limestone will be eaten away to the point where the weight of the Earth on top of it will no longer be able to be supported by the leftover limestone, hence it collapses, which would leave a sinkhole.
