The movement of supplies and parts must be done expeditiously for orders for finished products are delivered on time to customers.
In a factory, its needed supplies and parts must be handled efficiently in order to have the company's product be built with few delays and few stoppages in the production lines.
For the most part, supplies needed for the production of a product will reach the factory by truck, or in some cases by direct railroad links to the factory. With regard to this, the following will need attention:
* many times delivered supplies and parts are moved by hand or by forklifts within the factory;
* quite often, even when producing the most technically advanced products, some type of conveyor belt system is used. This production line will be manned by skilled workers and robotic ones;
* supplies need to arrive on time, or production will be negatively affected;
* supplies cannot be "over supplied" as there is no place to keep them and if the supplies are not going to be used on a timely basis, there is an additional cost for their storage, along with the expenditures used to purchase them;
* a measured extra supply is required, however, for emergencies and for unscheduled delays from suppliers;
* parts for the machines required for production need to be reliable;
* there needs to be storage for extra parts for the emergencies mentioned earlier;
All supplies and parts used in production must meet safety standards. This protects workers and prevents supplies and parts from being damaged.
