Some trees and shrubs shed their leaves in winter because the lower levels of sunlight would reduce their ability to photosynthesise. The tree enters a dormant phase until the light conditions enable it to resume photosynthesise in the spring. The old leaves are shed otherwise they could cause damage to the tree during the strong winds and snow fall which often occurs during the winter. A branch full of leaves acts like a sail in strong winds and can break or even cause the whole tree to blow over. A bare branch allows the wind to pass with less resistance and is less susceptible to damage. Likewise a bare branch will hold less snow, so it is less likely to crack under the weight.

Leaves serve as carbohydrate factories for the tree. When the tree goes dormant and the leaves fall off, it survives on saved carbohydrates it produced all summer.

What are tree that lose their leaves?

Why do trees have needle like leaves?

Deciduous trees are trees that lose their leaves. Trees that don't lose their leaves are "Evergreens". Evergreen trees have needles, instead of flat leaves, to survive winter hardship. Needles cut evaporation so trees can save water - dear in the winter. Not all trees that bear needles are evergreen, for example the larch drops it's needles in the Autumn.

Why are spruce trees more likely to survive in areas with extreme changes in climate?

Spruce trees are more likely to survive in areas with extreme changes in climate because, spruce trees are equipped with a thick cuticle that covers their needle-like leaves. this waxy cuticle that covers each needle prevents water loss from spruce and pine needles. because of this they are able to survive in cold months, and drastic weather changes, because they do not have to worry about water loss, like other trees. if you have ever noticed, in the winter maple trees have no leaves on them because they are not protected for winter months, while spruce and fir trees needles are still on the tree and look fresh, and not harmed, because they cannot lose water, keeping them healthy all year long.
