Those built in a useful capacity rating are reconditioned, tested, and
kept in stock to replace others. Those that have been totally destroyed
by lightning, or are of such small capacity that they no longer have great
value in our modern power-hungry neighborhoods, are sold by weight as
scrap metal. Their value is not insignificant, since a large part of the weight
of a utility transformer is the copper windings, and the price of copper has
gone through the roof lately.
I had a college summer job in the "transformer room" of the local utility
in my home town, in the early 1960s. I took a little 5 KVA transformer
that had been hit by lightning, replaced, and brought in for disposal.
I disposed of what was left of the burned oil, steam-cleaned the core,
high-voltage tested it and confirmed that the windings were fine, then
reassembled it, painted it with a new coat of dark blue and my ham-radio
call-sign, and took it home in return for a $3 payment to the company.
I still have it and have never used it yet. But if I ever get around to it,
I can either build myself a legal-limit ham radio power amplifier now that
I have the most expensive component, or just surrender, admit that I'll
never use it, sell the 50 pounds of heavy copper wire in it, and buy something
nice for my wife.
My boy's Transformer lasted about a year, then broke into several pieces.

if you wish to recycle car tyres that are present on your car, you should visit a reputable tyre center when you come to replace them, the law (uk) states that the center must dispose of the tyres according to the guidelines set out by the relevant authority, most old tyres are sent back to the manufactures to be melted down, however some tyres are sent off to places such as race tracks and used as barriers around the track, this is just one example of use. if you have loose tyres that you wish to dispose of in an enviro-freindly way, just take them down to your local tyre center who will dispose of them for you, some centers charge a small fee to cover the cost of handling etc. hope this helps.
Transformers will make a buzzing sound when old or getting tired or near failure, see if it is hot to touch? Measure its amp draw, it should not be much, a 48 VA transformer will pull 2 amps max only 1.8 continuously.
Many of the companies that sell bedding will dispose of your old bedding as part of the sale. You should also check with the Salvation Army and Good Will to see if they will dispose of it for you.

Sadly, many companies are willing to export old and broken electronics to and then they need to responsibly dispose of these products after Sony has a free drop-off program, Tosiba and Gateway have trade-in programs, and Apple and Dell recycle old products
Old transformers just contain copper and iron or steel. Sorry.
