Landmarks serve as markers for both tourists and locals. They are often decided based on permanence, notability and significance; and often times serve to highlight both places of historical and navigational significance in a community.
In the beginning, landmarks served to enable people and animals to venture out for food and such necessitates, and to return home with little problem. These landmarks were generally not very far from the desired location. In addition to culture, landmarks also serve navigational purposes; for animals, tourists and locals. This is because, for an object or location to be termed a landmark, it must be eye-catching and hard to miss.
Landmarks as it relates to tourism often evoke a sense of awe and wonder to people around the world, this is so whether these landmarks are natural or man-made. Such examples are: the city of Machu Picchu and Niagara falls. The draw for tourist are the grand and the ‘too wondrous to be real’ feeling experienced when viewing these gems.
One aspect of the fascination that people have with landmarks, particularly the natural ones or the landmarks made hundreds of years ago is that for the most part, they tell the story of ‘a time long past,’along with the fact that they have lasted this long, and are still beautiful, still amazing and absolutely fascinating is simply breathtaking.
The historical significance of landmarks serve to allows people to acknowledge and be curious about events that unfolded before our time. It serves to illustrate the event and allow the interested parties to feel more connected to the story. Landmarks also function to add personality and character to a location, and this in turn generates income from tourism and from interested parties.
Landmarks, as previously mentioned also function to stimulate a country’s economy. Famous landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty, and the Eiffel Tower, manage to generate enough income to possibly largely run a small island. The ancient Pyramids, Machu Picchu, and the Angkor Wat, tell wonderful stories of civilizations long past, and they, as tourism has shown, never cease to amaze us in the most interesting of ways.
The landmarks serve to fuel interest in various cultures and their histories. This is great on many counts, particularly as the world becomes a global community and everyone develops interest in each other. The interests generated by the landmark from outside the community also gets picked up by the community itself and it becomes a loop.
This human interest, in some ways function to ensure the preservation of these slices of paradise, as ensuring the upkeep of the attraction, will guarantee the continued interest of tourists.
In the end, this interest and the overall attention will serve as a point of pride for the community; which may then allow the community to ‘find its place in the world’. Landmarks overall, are not simply geographical features, but historical and cultural markers, both natural and man-made, that highlight significant events as well as generate interest with in a community or a country.
