first disconnect the battery.
locate the starter, it is under the passenger side. I was small enough to get under the car without having to lift it. If you can't get under the car then you must lift the car using your jack and jack stands etc.
The starter is right next to the END of the Passenger side exhaust manifold. There are 2 bolts holding the starter to the block I believe it was a 13mm or 14mm. Unscrew the bolts and the starter will be loose in the casing but it is still connected to the terminals. With a large screw driver or a small crowbar push the starter past the oil dipstick, make sure the wires are not in the way(push it towards the front of the car) enough to free it completely from the block. Then wiggle it enough to free and pull it out downwards under the block from here it is easier to disconnect the terminals.
To reinstall just connect the terminals again wiggle upwards...... same process and lastly connect the battery again. I hope this helps someone out. Its a bit tight in there but it comes out with patience. Wear eye protection its real nasty in there. If the car does not start right away do not get discouraged let the car sit with all the lights off. I had to place the car in Neutral try to start then placed it in Park and it finally started up like nothing ever happened :-).

A person an change the starter on a 2002 GMC Sierra 1500 by disconnecting the battery and removing the retaining bolts on the starter. The original starter is then disconnected from the wiring and a new starter reconnected.
It is in the side of the engine block behind the starter. You will have to remove the starter to see it and to get to it.
With great care.
Disconnect the battery. The starter should have two or three bolts holding it in. And there will be wires connected on it. Loosen the bolts and wiring connectors, then remove the starter from its mount.
The starter relay on a 1999 GMC Suburban with the bib block engine is located on the solenoid for the starter. The solenoid for the starter is on top of the starter.
You didn't say what size engine you have. But I would have to say that it is a V-8 engine. The sensor will be bolted into the passenger side of the engine BEHIND the starter. You Will Have To REMOVE the starter.
The starter on a 2002 Sierra 1500 5.3L is changed by disconnecting the negative battery cable and unbolting the starter. The starter is then lowered, the wires disconnected, and a new unit put in its place.
