Most just pull out. there will be a vac hose attached to one side & will probably be pushed into a rubber grommet on valve cover on the other.
The PCV valve for your 1996 Ford Explorer - 5.0 L - V8 engine is at the back of the intake manifold - according to my Haynes repair manual
Change the pcv valve in the valve cover.

On my 1995 the PCV valve is on the engine valve cover , on the driver side , near the rear of the valve cover
On a 1996 Chevy Camaro, the PCV valve is located on the right side of the valve cover. There is a hose that runs from the PCV valve and connects to the back of the intake manifold.
On the valve cover (drivers side) back towards the fire wall. you will see a black airline hose, connected to it.
On a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac : I believe the PCV valve is on the REAR of the drivers side engine valve cover ( between the valve cover and the firewall )

Remove the PCV valve retaining screws. Remove the PCV valve hose. Reverse the process to install the new PCV valve.
Disconnect the PCV valve tube from the PCV valve.Disconnect the PCV valve electrical connector if it has one.Turn the PCV valve counterclockwise to remove from the valve cover.To install, reverse the removal procedure.
