Garageband is your own music. You are making your own music. If you mean someone else's music, you can copy music from Itunes when you create a new song. Select + (Create new song) and then Copy from iTunes at the Song selection page.

The iTunes software will link to the iPod but you do not need to purchase music from the iTunes store as you can add music from any source; such as your own CDs or music files already on your computer. Other retailers, such as Amazon, provide downloading software which allows any music you purchase from them to be automatically added to your iTunes music library.

No, you do not have to buy music from iTunes. If you purchase music from an authorized distributor, you may freely use (not distribute or share) the music. If you own a compact disk, start the iTunes application and insert the compact disk into your computer. iTunes will ask if you want to import your music into your iTunes library. Once in your library, you can sync the music onto your ipod. Remember, when you make illegal copies of someone's creative work, you are stealing and breaking the law.
If you do not have a copy of iTunes software installed install a copy of Itunes software. Assuming the music on the laptop is in mp3 format drag the music files in to the iTunes music library. You can also add tracks from CDs you may own and iTunes can convert them to the mp3 format. Connect the iPod to the laptop's USB socket and iTunes will recognise it. You can then manage the music you want added to your iPod - iTunes can pick a random selection for you or you can set up your own playlist of tracks you particularly want to hear.
You pay when you buy music from the iTunes store, just like any other store, apart from that the iTunes software is free and you can import music from other sources, such as CDs you own, without charge.
