WII is pronunced viiy (vyi) Really!!
We. That's the idea of it. Wii is a play on words with 'we', as its concept is to get multiple people all playing at once, waving the controller about etc. If it didn't have two 'i's it would be pronounced 'why'.
The Original Name 4 the Wii was Revolution, but it sounded like it wouldn't attract kids and would be too hard to pronounce in some countries, but when they changed it to Wii many Adults didn't like that because it sounded childish (boy were they wrong!). Nintendo said It was perfect because it sounds like WE, which is who its for. They also liked the fact that it is easy to pronounce plus the two eyes look like people playing and like the Wiimote and Nunchuck. That Answers your ?. Your Welcome.

The Wii U is a different console to the Wii. The Wii U however is compatible with Wii games and accessories.

No, you cannot connect a Wii U controller to a Wii. Only Wii Remotes and other Wii accessories will work for the Wii, and the Wii U GamePad only works for the Wii U.
