It really depends on what software you are using. For the most part, you can simply copy and paste the picture into the document. Some software may require the picture to be in a particular format or to utilize an insert feature rather than a copy/paste technique.
When a picture says something better than 1000 words can do, or is simpler to understand a concept quickly. Or to make errors more obvious. A color graphic of a split open connector can show you exactly what each wire color looks like going to each their designated pin, which is better than relying solely on a text which says what a wire is color coded like and which pin to solder it to. If there are similar wires you may connect wrong pins. Similarly if the connector is numbered from the front or the solder side the text may assume opposite of the connector in your hand. Novels may also have illustrations, but a paper back version may be printed wo them. These typically serve to set a mood and may be very nice, they are typially bought by a savvy audience of readers who like to see a well bound book with illustrations to go with a story, but the illustrations take up space and are costly to print in paperback versions which compete on price. For license art illustrations may not even be an option for a paper back or an abbreviation may be necessary.
